Maribyrnong City Council
The West Footscray Employment Precinct Framework Plan defines a long-term vision to guide the future of this 49.5 hectare precinct of industrial land in the City of Maribyrnong, to the west of Melbourne’s CBD. The precinct forms the very eastern edge of the Western State Significant Industrial Precinct (SSIP).
Plan2Place have proposed an ambitious long term plan to transform the precinct over the coming decades into an enterprise precinct to serve Melbourne’s inner west and support the SSIP.
Supporting innovative industrial and commercial land uses and providing more diverse and dense employment options for the region, increased job densities are envisioned that will capitalise on excellent public transport services and the locational benefits of being between state significant industrial land and the Central Business District. The precinct’s desirability as an employment location will be driven by improvements to its amenity (assisted by built form guidelines), and opportunities to better utilise its unique heritage elements set out in the Framework Plan.
With many of the building blocks are in place to transform to a high amenity enterprise precinct over the coming decades, West Footscray has an exciting future as a job rich precinct built on the strength of existing successful and emerging businesses within the precinct.
While it is recognised that the achievement of the vision will take many decades, Plan2Place Consulting has developed a contemporary plan for Maribyrnong City Council to manage the precinct’s transition enabling them to allocate resources accordingly, and advocate to the State Government for the necessary supporting investment. The Plan was adopted by Council in April 2020 and Council are now preparing a planning scheme amendment.
